*Louis Armstrong*
Music giant and New Orleans' most beloved ambassador.
"Satchmo", as he was affectionately called by his legions of friends, never boasted like his fellow New Orleanian, jazzman Jelly Roll Morton, that he invented jazz, or for that matter that he was one of its better players. But everyone who heard him play or hears his inimitable style today can only agree that Daniel Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong was perhaps the best there has ever been.
His worldwide popularity and the popularity of jazz can be directly attributed to the infectious style of performance that "Satchmo" gave and the unselfishness that characterized his persona. Louis Armstrong: a true musical giant who helped shape New Orleans and America.
*Jelly Roll Morton*
Native New Orleanian Jellyroll Morton is regarded as the first jazz composer.
"I invented jazz" is how Jelly Roll Morton often introduced himself. And the fact is he was probably right. That is, jazz as we've come to know it today. Jazz was a hybrid of musical influences from the rhythms of Africa brought into New Orleans by slaves to the refinement of that natural sound by early 19th century classically trained black composers. Jelly Roll Morton is regarded as the first true jazz composer. He was the first to write down his jazz arrangements in musical notation, and he was the originator of a large number of the musical compositions that became staples in the jazz repertory.
*Buddy Bolden*
The first of the great New Orleans jazz figures thrilled audiences with his unique style of horn playing. Out of the stillness of the evening a horn uttered its impassioned plaint. A drummer began an endless insistent beat, pounding. Other players took up the music's wail, each in his own style, sometimes jarring, but for the most part blending with the rest. Feet shuffled, and a hoarse voice sang in a mood that was half sad memory, half tragic appeal. Then the tempo quickened, the mood brightened; and always, under it, through it, came the pounding beat, drumming through the night. First of the great New Orleans jazz figures was Buddy Bolden, a barber who blew his horn to glory. He had two loves, music and women; in both he won money, local fame and jewels. Friends remember how, as he marched along, one grinning girl held his coat, another his hat, and during his moments of rest, a third took his horn.
